Rich’s relationship with Frank Sinatra is described in the Wikepedia entry for Buddy Rich. Other sources reveal that Frank Sinatra originally sponsored his concerts, but when no one showed up and Sinatra lost money, Sinatra withdrew support.
The claim that Buddy Rich was in the Dorsey Band in 1942 doesn’t have much evidence to support it. Excuse my imprecision, but I think I’ve spotted him dressed as a girl in the 1957 Scarsdale High School yearbook, and also seated at a piano in another photo dressed as a male. I’ll post those eventually, so that other people can decide for themselves.

In 1946, Rich formed his own band with financial support from Sinatra, and continued to lead different groups on and off until the early fifties.[2]:92, 95[8]
Rich was known to have a short temper. Dusty Springfield reportedly slapped Rich after several days of “putting up with Rich’s insults and show-biz sabotage”.[27][28] He was also known for his rivalry with Frank Sinatra—which sometimes ended in brawls—when both were members of Tommy Dorsey‘s band. However, the two remained lifelong friends and Sinatra delivered a eulogy at Rich’s funeral.[29]Billy Cobham stated he once met Rich in a club and asked him to sign his snare but Rich dropped it down the stairs.[30]
Rich’s temper, mercurial attitude, and imposing personality were documented in secret recordings that pianist Lee Musiker made during some of his tantrums on tour buses and backstage in the early 1980s.[34] These recordings, long circulated in bootleg form, have done much to fuel the reputation of Rich’s personality. The tapes were popular with comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, who used three quotes from them more or less verbatim on Seinfeld:[35]
A close analysis of the faces of Buddy Rich and Senator John McCain, reveal that it is the same man. The wrinkle marks of the forehead and upper nose match precisely in the two characters.
